Kichere Opens the Inaugural Meeting of the Steering Committee of the AFROSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) The Chair of the AFROSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) and Controller and Auditor General of the United Republic of Tanzania, CPA. Adv. Charles E. Kichere, officially opened the inaugural meeting of the Steering Committee for the 2025–2027 term, held on September 9th, 2025, virtually from Dodoma, Tanzania.


In his opening remarks, Chair Kichere expressed gratitude to members for their voluntary commitment, expertise, and dedication towards advancing environmental accountability across Africa. “This Steering Committee plays a vital role in guiding the strategic direction of AFROSAI-WGEA, endorsing innovative tools, and strengthening the collective voice of Africa in global environmental accountability. Together, we will turn plans into tangible results that safeguard our continent’s future,” he said.
 

He emphasized the Steering Committee’s strategic role in guiding the direction of the Working Group, approving the triennial work plan, and endorsing tools and approaches that enhance environmental auditing. The 2025–2027 Work Plan will address four priority areas, climate change, blue economy management, environmental pollution and waste management and water security and trans-boundary water governance.


One of the key milestones of the meeting was the election of the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of Egypt as Vice-Chair of the AFROSAI-WGEA Secretariat, which will operate under the leadership of Chair CPA. Adv. Charles E. Kichere. This election reflects the spirit of collaboration and regional ownership in driving forward the environmental auditing agenda across Africa.


The AFROSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) brings together 25 Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) across Africa, including Tanzania, Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Kenya, Lesotho, Libya, Madagascar, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The collective mandate of the WGEA is to strengthen environmental auditing, promote accountability, and enhance sustainable management of natural resources across the continent.


In his closing remarks, Chair Kichere congratulated SAI Egypt on its election and urged members to turn endorsed plans into tangible results. He further commended the Secretariat for its efforts in preparation and coordination, noting that the real test lies ahead in effective implementation of the WGEA 2025–2027 roadmap.

With unity of purpose and strong collaboration, the inaugural Steering Committee meeting laid a firm foundation for strengthening environmental auditing and accountability across the African continent for the 2025–2027 term.
