This performance audit aimed to assess whether the Ministry of Minerals and the Geological Survey of Tanzania effectively manages geoscientific data in the Mining Sector to ensure its availability and accessibility to the public and the Government.
The audit found that, the Geological Survey of Tanzania did not adequately make geoscientific data available for mining operations in the country; Did not effectively acquire, analyse and interpret geoscientific data; ineffective banking and accessibility of geoscientific data to the Public and Government; and inadequate monitoring of the performance of GST on the management of geoscientific data by the Ministry of Minerals.
The audit recommended that the Geological Survey of Tanzania enhance the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of geoscientific data by expanding geological mapping and surveys, standardising data submission and review procedures, enforcing data submission from mineral rights holders and upgrading its analytical capacity. Also, the Ministry of Minerals is urged to strengthen the monitoring and evaluation of GST's performance by establishing clear monitoring plans, performance metrics, and reporting mechanisms to ensure effective geoscientific data management.
