This Performance Audit assessed whether the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) adequately manages meteorological services to provide accurate, timely and reliable weather forecasts to support and safeguard public safety, economic activities, and environmental management.

The audit found that TMA did not attain the accuracy of weather forecasting by 0.6% to 20% in the years 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2023/24. This was attributed to the insufficient processing and verification of processed weather data. Also, TMA did not register the existing 628 meteorological stations under its ownership (TMA) and 353 stations owned by other operators. This was due to TMA lacking a plan for the registration of meteorological stations for the years 2019/20 and 2020/21 and lack of a measurable plan for the registration of meteorological stations in the years 2021/22 to 2023/24. Hence, TZS 105,900,000 was not collected from registration fees.

The audit recommended that the TMA improve weather data processing and ensure the provision of downscaled weather forecasts and services. Additionally, it advised improving the regulatory functions through registrations of meteorological services and issuance of permits to operate meteorological services.
